Group Inerane–Guitars From Agadez (Music of Niger)

Saw this post on SFRP and had to post it. Thanks for the original up.

Group Inerane is the now sound of the Tuareg Guitar Revolution sweeping across the Sahara Desert and inspired by the rebel musicians that started this music as a political weapon used to communicate from the Libyan Refugee camps in the 1980s and 1990s. Spearheaded by the enigmatic guitar hero Bibi Ahmed, Group Inerane has been together for several years and carries the rich tradition of Tamachek guitar songs for another generation. These ten tracks are a combination of amplified roots rock, blues, and folk in the local Tuareg styles at times entering into full-on electric guitar psychedelia. This music is performed with two electric guitars, a drum kit and a chorus of vocalists. The recordings were captured live in the city of Agadez in the Republic of Niger.

Tappa Zukie - From The Archives

Of all the Jamaican DJs tearing up the sound systems during the mid-'70s, Tappa Zukie seemed the least likely contender for international stardom. Although he released a stream of singles, only a handful caught on across the island, and his hit quotient was much lower than most of his contemporaries. But in Britain, it was another story entirely. There his debut album, Man Ah Warrior, was selling up a storm; it wasn't even released in Jamaica. Zukie cut a string of singles during 1975, then began work the following year on his self-produced sophomore album, MPLA. If Warrior had blown though through the U.K.'s underground like a hurricane, MPLA was the equivalent of a nuclear bomb, exploding across sound systems and punk clubs throughout the land. And that set forms the backbone of From the Archives, bundling up eight of MPLA's tracks, tossing in Zukie's biggest Jamaican hit, "Oh Lord," and rounding up a few other period numbers as well. Much of the DJ's success came down to the phenomenal rhythms he was toasting over. They weren't his own; he had sweet-talked a number of the island's top producers -- Bunny Lee, JoJo Hookim, Yabby You, and Ossie Hibbert, into parting with a clutch of rhythms, and with those he built his album and his reputation. With the Revolutionaries laying down the sizzling rockers accompaniment, Horace Andy, Johnny Clarke, the Melodians' Tony Brevitt, and Junior Ross providing vocal assistance, and his own stellar production skills, Zukie recorded some of the most militant-sounding music around. As for his toasting -- well, by 1976 people were demanding more from the DJs than he was capable of, at least in Jamaica. Abroad, his animated delivery, obvious enthusiasm, and anthemic toasts turned him into an icon. Britons cared little about his cultural credentials and couldn't care less that "MPLA" isn't actually a tribute to freedom fighters, "Marcus" has more to do with rice and peas than the great prophet Garvey, "Chalis to Chalis" is lifted wholesale from U-Roy, and "Oh Lord" is not a devotional prayer but an ode to girls in shorts. They were too busy lapping up the rhythms and skanking away to the DJ's breezy toasts. This is where it all began, and even if Zukie's toasting fails to thrill, this collection is still hot enough to melt the most discerning listener.

Dr. Alimantado - Best Dressed Chicken In Town

Alimantado was born James Winston Thompson in Kingston, 1952. His talent was in deejaying and he listened and learnt from the master and originator of the art, the great U Roy.

While working for many different producers at the beginning of his career, he constantly changed his alias, including the names Winston Prince, Winston Cool and Ital Winston. Despite the fact that none of these records had sold very well, he decided to start his own label and produce by himself. He founded his label Vital Food in 1973, and Dr. Alimantado was born the same year with the release of "Just The Other Day".

"Best Dressed Chicken In Town" is a compilation of the best of the Doc's music from 1973-76, and the title track is the most outstanding track of all on this album. It was recorded by Lee Perry in 1974 in the then new Black Ark Studio. Perry and the Doc used the rhythm track of Horace Andy's "Ain't No Sunshine" and created three minutes of musical madness. The song was put in the meat chopper, echoes and heavy basses were added, and tapes were speeded up and down until the whole thing became a whirlpool of sound.

All of the songs on this album are dub-inflected tracks and prove a potent combination, but this still is an underrated roots masterpiece. The highlights, beside the title track, are "I Killed The Barber", "Poison Flour" and "Gimme Mi Gun". "Best Dressed Chicken In Town" is must for reggae enthusiasts.

O-Zone DiscO-Zone

This could make many of you terribly, terribly ill, especially since the band was somehow related to Happy Meals in Eastern Europe, but here in the US "Dragostea din tei" wasn't the HUGE hit it was elsewhere. The song is unbelievably infectious, pure contemporary pop, it is nostalgia without the comfort of the past...it is the art of the present! If you have a soft spot for hyper disposable techno grab it!

"Fiesta de la noche" – 4:02
"De ce plâng chitarele" – 4:10

Disco Dancer OST

Thanks to SW for pointing this movie out to me. The film itself is relatively easy to come by, on the other hand the soundtrack is oddly rare. A friend in Bombay managed to find this one for me, and she admitted that to do so took a few back and forths, plus phone calls and bribes. The movie is worth picking up, and the score is entirely infectious, with Goron Ki Na Kalon Ki getting the highest rating.

801 Live

ALLMUSIC SAYS: 801 provided Roxy Music guitarist Phil Manzanera with one of his most intriguing side projects. Although the band only played three gigs in August and September 1976, this album captures a night when everything fell right into place musically. That should only be expected with names like Eno and Simon Phillips in the lineup. (Still, the lesser-known players -- bassist Bill McCormick, keyboardist Francis Monkman, and slide guitarist Lloyd Watson -- are in exemplary form, too.) The repertoire is boldly diverse, opening with "Lagrima," a crunchy solo guitar piece from Manzanera. Then the band undertakes a spacy but smoldering version of "Tomorrow Never Knows"; it's definitely among the cleverest of Beatles covers. Then it's on to crisp jazz-rock ("East of Asteroid"), atmospheric psych-pop ("Rongwrong"), and Eno's tape manipulation showcase, "Sombre Reptiles." And that's only the first five songs. The rest of the gig is no less audacious, with no less than three Eno songs -- including a frenetic "Baby's on Fire," "Third Uncle," and "Miss Shapiro"'s dense, syllable-packed verbal gymnastics. There's another unlikely cover of the Kinks' "You Really Got Me," while Manzanera turns in another typically gusty instrumental performance on "Diamond Head." This album marks probably one of the last times that Eno rocked out in such an unself-consciously fun fashion, but that's not the only reason to buy it: 801 Live is a cohesive document of an unlikely crew who had fun and took chances. Listeners will never know what else they might have done if their schedules had been less crowded, but this album's a good reminder.
Please leave comments.

Ripping Flamenco-Rock from Spain. Known primarily for their hit 'Te Estoy Amando Locamente' the sisters who made up Las Grecas mixed psych, flamenco, 70's hard rock and disco to create an immensely original sound that has managed to escape the hands and ears of the amateur archeologists of the anglophone world of pop. Amon Düül 2 Yeti

Allmusic: The second album by Amon Düül II, 1970's Yeti, is their first masterpiece, one of the defining early albums of Krautrock. Yeti consists of a set of structured songs and a second disc of improvisations. It's testament to the group's fluidity and improvisational grace that the two albums don't actually sound that different from each other, and that the improvisational disc may actually be even better than the composed disc. The first disc opens with "Soap Shop Rock," a 12-minute suite that recalls King Crimson's early work in the way it switches easily between lyrical, contemplative passages and a more violent, charging sound, and continues through a series of six more songs in the two- to six-minute range, from the ominous, threatening "Archangels Thunderbird" (featuring a great doomy vocal by mono-named female singer Renate) to the delicate, almost folky acoustic tune "Cerberus." The improvisational disc contains only three tracks, closing with a nine-minute stunner called "Sandoz in the Rain" that's considered by many to be the birth of the entire space rock subgenre. A delicate, almost ambient wash of sound featuring delicately strummed phased acoustic guitars and a meandering flute, it's possibly the high point of Amon Düül II's entire career.

1. Soap Shop Rock:
